Tropheus brichardi
Also known as: Kipili Brichardi, Brichardi Tropheus Kipili
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Tropheus brichardi 'Kipili' is a distinctive and infrequently available form of T. brichardi, collected from the rocky shores near Kipili on the Tanzanian coast. Adults display a blue-grey to steel-blue body colouration with a contrasting yellow-orange margin on the dorsal fin — a combination that is immediately distinctive and sets this form apart from both moorii and duboisi.
T. brichardi as a species is characterised by its relatively slender build compared to T. moorii and its somewhat less extreme aggression, though it still requires proper colony management. The Kipili population is among the more sought-after brichardi variants due to its reliable captive breeding and striking appearance.
All Tropheus husbandry rules apply. The Kipili morph is recommended for experienced hobbyists who have successfully managed T. moorii colonies and wish to branch into other Tropheus species.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–20, KH 8–18; pristine water quality enhances blue-grey body sheen. Tank: 300 L minimum; structured rockwork providing multiple territories; open swimming area between rock formations. Feeding: Spirulina-based staple; accepts nori readily; avoid protein foods which suppress colour and cause bloat. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; smaller broods than moorii averaging 4–10 fry; fry reared as per moorii. Compatibility: Species-only recommended; may cohabit with Petrochromis in 400+ L aquariums.
