Tropheus duboisi
Also known as: Maswa Duboisi, Yellow-banded Duboisi
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Tropheus duboisi 'Maswa' stands apart from other duboisi populations by retaining a conspicuous yellow band across the mid-body into adulthood, rather than fading to a plain dark colouration. This makes the Maswa form one of the most visually appealing T. duboisi variants and explains its consistent demand among Tanganyika specialists.
Like all duboisi, juveniles are spectacularly spotted and the yellow band becomes visible as the spots fade, usually between 8 and 14 months. The yellow intensity is influenced by diet quality — spirulina and astaxanthin-rich foods help maintain vibrant pigmentation.
The Maswa population originates from the western Tanzanian shore and is available primarily from specialist breeders. All standard duboisi and Tropheus genus care requirements apply without exception.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–20, KH 8–18; high carbonate hardness buffers pH and supports colour intensity. Tank: 300 L minimum; yellow colouration more impressive in a species-only display with bright lighting. Feeding: Spirulina and astaxanthin-enriched pellets to maintain yellow band intensity; supplement with blanched nori. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; 5–15 fry; juveniles are particularly sought-after due to spotted pattern. Compatibility: Species-only or with Petrochromis species; never mix with T. moorii.
