Tropheus moorii
Also known as: Bulu Point Tropheus
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Tropheus moorii 'Bulu Point' is collected from the rocky Bulu Point shoreline on the Tanzanian coast. The defining characteristic is a clean yellow-to-white saddle on a dark charcoal body, creating a striking two-tone pattern that is immediately distinguishable from other moorii forms. The saddle colouration is well-defined and consistent across captive-bred populations.
Bulu Point is considered a moderately demanding Tropheus morph, offering reliable reproduction in captivity and good colour stability across generations. It is appreciated by hobbyists for its clean, unambiguous patterning compared to the more orange-dominated forms.
Husbandry is standard for the genus: colony size of 12 or more, strict herbivore diet, alkaline hard water, and extensive rocky décor. This morph integrates well into a dedicated Tropheus colony display alongside other compatible Tanganyika species.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–20, KH 8–18; ensure excellent mechanical and biological filtration in a densely stocked colony. Tank: 300 L minimum; tightly stacked rockwork creating numerous territories; sand or gravel substrate acceptable. Feeding: Spirulina-based flake and pellet; supplement with blanched nori; strictly no high-protein or fatty foods. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; 5–15 eggs per brood; females may be stripped at day 21 for safety. Compatibility: Species-only or with Petrochromis; avoid mixing with other Tropheus colour forms.
