Tropheus moorii
Also known as: Chaitika Tropheus
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Tropheus moorii 'Chaitika' hails from the southern Zambian shoreline near Chaitika Point. Adults develop a broad, deep yellow-orange mid-body band set against a charcoal-black body, creating a striking two-tone pattern that is highly valued by Tanganyika specialists.
The Chaitika population is considered one of the more manageable Tropheus morphs in terms of colour stability, consistently producing well-coloured offspring in captivity. Females are somewhat less dramatically coloured but retain the band throughout adulthood.
Colony management remains the defining challenge: 12 or more fish, a well-rockscaped 300 L aquarium, and a strictly vegetable-based diet are non-negotiable requirements. This morph should never be mixed with other Tropheus forms to prevent hybridisation.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–20, KH 8–18; regular large water changes maintain alkalinity. Tank: 300 L minimum with extensive rockwork; no sharp decorations that could injure compressed bodies. Feeding: High-quality spirulina flake or pellet; supplement with nori and blanched greens; never feed protein-rich foods. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder holding 5–15 eggs for approximately 4 weeks; isolate holding females if possible. Compatibility: Species-only or with Petrochromis and robust Lamprologini; never mix with other Tropheus colour forms.
