Tropheus moorii
Also known as: Kaiser II Tropheus, Ikola Kaiser Tropheus
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Tropheus moorii 'Ikola Kaiser II' is arguably the most famous and coveted of all Tropheus colour forms. Originating from the Ikola Bay area on the Tanzanian coast, dominant males develop a broad, intensely saturated flame-orange band across the mid-body contrasting with a jet-black anterior and posterior — a combination that has made this form the benchmark against which other Tropheus are judged.
Captive colonies of Kaiser II are maintained by dedicated breeders throughout Europe, and well-managed groups produce consistent, intensely coloured offspring. Peak male coloration develops between 14 and 24 months, and the colour intensifies further with age in high-quality water.
This morph demands all the standard rigours of Tropheus husbandry and is not recommended for beginners. However, for experienced keepers willing to invest in a proper Tropheus colony setup, the Kaiser II offers an unrivalled display of colour and natural behaviour.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 12–20, KH 10–18; excellent filtration and frequent water changes are non-negotiable. Tank: 300–400 L minimum; maximum rockwork density with visual barriers throughout the entire tank footprint. Feeding: Premium spirulina flake and Rift Lake colour pellets; colour-enhancing astaxanthin supplements boost orange intensity. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; brood 5–15 fry; strip females at day 21–28 or use a dedicated holding tank. Compatibility: Species-only; this morph's value and sensitivity make mixing inadvisable.
