Tropheus moorii
Also known as: Kasanga Tropheus, Red Kasanga
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Tropheus moorii 'Kasanga' originates from the rocky shores around Kasanga in southern Tanzania. The dominant colour feature is a vivid blood-red to brick-red saddle spanning the mid-body, set against a jet-black background — a combination that makes this morph one of the most visually arresting Tropheus available.
The Kasanga morph has been successfully maintained and bred in European fishrooms for decades and produces consistently coloured offspring. Males reach full colour at approximately 12–18 months and maintain intensity throughout adulthood provided water quality and diet are optimal.
Colony care requirements are identical to all Tropheus: strict herbivore diet, alkaline hard water, and large groups to dilute aggression. Experienced hobbyists often consider the Kasanga morph an ideal entry point into premium Tropheus keeping due to its reliable captive breeding performance.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–20, KH 8–18; avoid acidic conditions which trigger stress and bloat susceptibility. Tank: 300 L minimum, extensive rockwork creating multiple territories and visual barriers. Feeding: Spirulina flake as staple; high-quality Rift Lake pellets; blanched courgette or spinach; zero protein supplements. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; brood size 5–12; free-swimming fry can be reared on fine spirulina powder. Compatibility: Species tank recommended; compatible with Petrochromis trewavasae or large Neolamprologus species.
