Tropheus moorii
Also known as: Mpimbwe Red Tropheus
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Tropheus moorii 'Mpimbwe Red' originates from the Mpimbwe Bay region on the eastern Tanzanian shore of Lake Tanganyika. Males develop a deep brick-red to carmine colouration that spreads across the majority of the body, intensifying with age and condition. This morph is distinct from the Red Rainbow form and is valued for its warmer, deeper red tones.
Captive-bred specimens are available from specialist breeders and breed reliably, though colour intensity in offspring can vary if breeding pairs are not carefully selected. Water quality and a spirulina-based diet are particularly important for sustaining the deep red pigmentation.
All standard Tropheus management applies: large colony of 12+, extensive rockwork, strict herbivore diet, and regular monitoring for early signs of bloat, which remains the principal health risk for the genus.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–20, KH 8–18; stable alkalinity essential for colour and health. Tank: 300 L minimum; abundant rockwork hiding spots; strong water movement replicating wave action is beneficial. Feeding: Spirulina flake and pellet core diet; astaxanthin-enhanced foods help maintain red pigmentation intensity. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; 5–12 fry per brood; fry reared easily on crushed spirulina flake. Compatibility: Species-only or with Petrochromis species of similar size and aggression level.
