Tropheus moorii
Also known as: Murago Tropheus, Yellow Band Tropheus
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Tropheus moorii 'Murago' is one of the most commonly available and visually consistent Tropheus morphs, originating from the Murago area on the western Tanzanian shore. Adults display a broad yellow-to-orange mid-body band that covers a significant portion of the flanks, set against a dark charcoal body.
The Murago morph is considered a good introductory Tropheus due to its relative hardiness, reliable captive reproduction, and consistent colouration across generations. It is frequently recommended by specialist breeders as a starting point for hobbyists new to the genus.
Despite its relative accessibility, all standard Tropheus requirements apply: strict herbivore diet, alkaline water, and a colony of no fewer than 12 fish with extensive rocky décor to break up territories and minimise lethal aggression.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–20, KH 8–18; stable chemistry is paramount — avoid fluctuations. Tank: 300 L minimum; tightly stacked rocks forming caves, tunnels, and visual barriers throughout. Feeding: High-quality spirulina flake and Rift Lake cichlid pellets; supplement with blanched peas or nori strips. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; 5–15 fry per brood; free-swimming young after approximately 4 weeks. Compatibility: Species-only preferred; may share space with Petrochromis or robust Neolamprologus in 400+ L tanks.
