Tropheus moorii
Also known as: Red Rainbow Tropheus
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Tropheus moorii 'Red Rainbow' is among the most intensely coloured and visually spectacular of all Tropheus colour morphs. Dominant males develop a deep flame-red to crimson body colouration that extends across the majority of the flanks, with subtle iridescent highlights under bright lighting.
This form is highly sought after by advanced Tanganyika specialists and commands premium pricing. Captive-bred specimens are available from a small number of dedicated breeders, and colour intensity is reliably maintained across generations when diet and water conditions are properly managed.
The Red Rainbow is best showcased in a species-only display tank of 400 L or more with natural-looking rockwork, allowing males to develop and display their full colour potential. All Tropheus husbandry rules apply strictly.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 12–20, KH 10–18; high alkalinity enhances red colouration in males. Tank: 300–400 L minimum; natural rockwork replicating Tanganyika rocky shores; no sharp edges. Feeding: Premium spirulina-based diet exclusively; colour-enhancing Rift Lake pellets aid pigment intensity. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; female holds 5–15 fry for 4 weeks; separate breeding colony recommended. Compatibility: Species-only tank strongly recommended to showcase colouration and simplify management.
