Tropheus sp. "Ikola"
Also known as: Ikola Tropheus, Sunset Tropheus
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
The Ikola locality Tropheus is sourced from the Tanzanian coastline near Ikola and is one of the most popular and brightly coloured Tropheus morphs. Males in breeding condition display an intense yellow-orange flank saddle and actively court females via lateral displays. A strict herbivore; any protein-rich feeding risks fatal bloat.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water with stable chemistry. Tank: 300L minimum for a colony of 12; dense rockwork with multiple exit routes between rocks. Feeding: Spirulina-based flake or pellet only; supplement with nori or blanched courgette. Behaviour: Males are territorial and breed continuously; remove exhausted females temporarily if needed. Compatibility: Single-species colony recommended; or combine with Petrochromis trewavasae.
