Capoeta trutta
Also known as: Trout Barb, Spotted Capoeta
Origin: Turkey, Tigris-Euphrates basin, Middle East
Capoeta trutta — the Trout Barb — earns its evocative common name from the dense pattern of dark spots adorning its large, silver body, which under certain lighting is strikingly reminiscent of a brown trout. It is a large, powerful fish native to the headwaters and upper reaches of the Tigris, Euphrates, and adjacent river systems across Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. It inhabits swift, cold, highly oxygenated mountain streams.
This is a specialist species requiring cool, fast, oxygen-rich water — temperatures above 22°C will stress it significantly. A very large, powerfully filtered aquarium with strong water movement and a rocky substrate is essential. Capoeta trutta is a peaceful fish despite its size and works well with other large, cool-water cyprinids. Its spotted flanks are truly spectacular in a large display tank.
Diet comprises algae, biofilm, invertebrates, and vegetable matter. In captivity: spirulina pellets, sinking omnivore pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional frozen invertebrates. This is not a fish for conventional tropical aquariums but for the dedicated temperate or cold-water specialist who can meet its demanding spatial and thermal requirements.
Water: 12–22°C, pH 7.0–8.5, hard to very hard; powerful flow and high dissolved oxygen non-negotiable. Tank: 500 L minimum; professional-grade filtration; cooler room temperature ideal. Feeding: Omnivore; spirulina, sinking pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, frozen invertebrates. Breeding: Not achieved in home aquaria; requires cold, fast-flowing river conditions. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep with large cool-water cyprinids and bottom-dwellers.
