Plagiotremus rhinorhynchos
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Tube-worm Blenny (also known as the Shorthead Sabretooth Blenny) is a cunning mimic of the beneficial cleaner wrasse, exploiting its deceptively similar coloration to approach unsuspecting fish and take bites of scales and mucus. In community aquariums this behavior causes chronic stress and injury to other fish, making it problematic unless kept in carefully managed or species-appropriate setups. A fascinating behavioral study for experienced marine aquarists who understand and accommodate its specialized ecology.
Keep in species-only setups or with very large, robust fish that are not stressed by occasional nipping. Not suitable for general community reef tanks or with small, sensitive species. Feed meaty frozen foods: mysis, krill, and similar. May require live or semi-live food initially to trigger feeding responses. Provide rockwork with small caves. An interesting specimen for dedicated marine biologists and advanced keepers only.
