Tuberoschistura arakanensis
Also known as: Arakanensis Loach, Knobby-nosed Stream Loach
Origin: Myanmar (Arakan/Rakhine)
Tuberoschistura arakanensis is one of the most morphologically unusual stream loaches in the world, characterised by prominent fleshy tubercles on the snout that give it a rhinoceros-like facial appearance. Described from the Arakan (Rakhine) coastal rivers of Myanmar, it represents the entire genus Tuberoschistura — a monotypic genus defined entirely by this extraordinary nasal ornamentation.
Care in the aquarium requires clean, well-oxygenated stream-type conditions with moderate current and a mixed sand-and-pebble substrate. The aquarium should be fully mature with stable water chemistry before introduction, as this rare species requires consistently excellent conditions. Groups of five or more are recommended to reduce individual stress and encourage natural behaviour.
Feeding is based on micro sinking foods: frozen bloodworm, daphnia, cyclops, and small live invertebrates. Given its rarity and unusual morphology, Tuberoschistura arakanensis is a prestige acquisition for the serious loach specialist. It is likely the only specimen of its genus most aquarists will ever encounter.
Water: pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 20–26°C, well-oxygenated, moderate flow. Tank: 60 L minimum; fine sand and pebbles, rock caves, fully cycled and mature setup. Feeding: Frozen bloodworm, daphnia, cyclops, small live invertebrates. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with other small stream fish; requires specialist keeper.
