Nemacheilus savona
Also known as: Savona Loach, Spotted Stone Loach
Origin: Mainland Southeast Asia
Nemacheilus savona is a stream loach from moderately fast-flowing waters of mainland Southeast Asia. Its body is covered in a bold, regular spotted pattern of dark brown on a cream-to-tan background, making it one of the more attractively marked nemacheilid loaches. It is an active, bottom-hugging species that explores every inch of its tank.
In the aquarium, N. savona requires well-oxygenated water with moderate to strong flow, and a substrate of fine gravel or smooth pebbles. It is not demanding in terms of water chemistry but does best in slightly cooler, well-aerated conditions that replicate its native hill-stream habitat. Strong filtration with good surface agitation is beneficial.
This species is social and should be kept in groups of five or more. It coexists well with other SE Asian stream species. Unlike some loaches, it is primarily diurnal and active throughout the day, making it a rewarding display species.
Water: 20-26°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderate — high oxygenation is the primary requirement. Tank: 60 L with gravel/pebble substrate, smooth rocks, and good flow. Feeding: sinking carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and tubifex. Breeding: not commonly bred in captivity; requires seasonal temperature drop as trigger. Compatibility: peaceful with similar hill-stream species; groups of 5+ strongly recommended.
