Tucanoichthys tucano
Origin: Brazil (Rio Uaupes, upper Amazon)
The Tucano Tetra is an exceptionally rare and tiny fish native to the black, highly acidic waters of the Rio Uaupes in the upper Amazon — one of the most extreme blackwater habitats on Earth. It displays a semi-translucent body with vivid orange and electric blue iridescence that makes it unmistakable even among other nano species. Due to its very specific and extreme water requirements, it is best suited only for experienced nano aquarists comfortable managing true blackwater conditions.
Use RO water conditioned with peat, Indian almond leaves, and blackwater extract to achieve pH 4.0–5.5, GH 0–3, KH 0–1. Temperature 26–30°C. Gentle sponge filtration only — no strong flow. Heavily planted biotope nano tank with dark substrate and tannin-stained water. Feed exclusively micro-foods: baby brine shrimp nauplii, micro-worms, and quality nano flake. Keep in groups of 10+. No larger tank mates.
