Tetraodon turgidus
Also known as: Blackwater Turgidus Puffer, Peat Swamp Turgidus, Dark Swollen Puffer
Origin: Sumatran peat swamp forest rivers, Indonesia
The blackwater form of Tetraodon turgidus is collected from peat swamp forest rivers of lowland Sumatra where highly tannin-stained water, very low pH, extremely soft conditions, and warm temperatures prevail year-round. This form displays a noticeably deeper, more saturated dark brown colouration compared to specimens from clearer Bornean rivers, with the mottling merging into a near-solid dark tone in the darkest peat water specimens. Translating the blackwater origin into the aquarium setup is critical: the water must be soft, acidic, and enriched with tannins from driftwood or Indian almond leaves to maintain optimal colour, immune function, and long-term health. Standard hard or alkaline tap water will cause rapid deterioration. This is a specialist form for committed puffer keepers with appropriate water conditioning capability.
Water: pH 4.5–6.5, temperature 24–28°C, very soft; tannin-stained blackwater essential; avoid alkaline tap water. Tank: 150 L minimum; peat substrate or fine dark sand; abundant driftwood and dried leaves; dim lighting. Feeding: Snails, mussels, clams, earthworms; hard-shelled food mandatory weekly; softer frozen items as supplement. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; peat swamp seasonal spawner in nature. Compatibility: Solitary; aggressive toward all tankmates; species-only tank with blackwater chemistry.
