Nothobranchius furzeri
Origin: Mozambique, Zimbabwe
Nothobranchius furzeri, the Turquoise Killifish, is both one of the most brilliant killifish and the shortest-lived vertebrate on Earth — with a natural lifespan of just 4–6 months in the wild. Males display a spectacular turquoise-blue body with red fin banding. An annual killifish from temporary pools in Mozambique; it survives seasonal pond drying as buried eggs in mud. In captivity it lives longer (to 2 years) but still breeds urgently. Eggs can be stored dry in peat moss for 3–6 months. A fascinating species for killifish specialists.
Separate pair in 30+ L tank. Soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–7.0). Feed live or frozen daphnia, bloodworm, brine shrimp — feeds voraciously. Peat moss substrate for egg-laying. Collect eggs every 2 weeks, store in moist peat at 25 °C for 6–8 weeks before wetting. Fast-living — feed generously.
