Melanotaenia lacustris
Origin: Lake Kutubu, Papua New Guinea
Melanotaenia lacustris, the Turquoise or Lake Kutubu Rainbowfish, is endemic to the deep, alkaline Lake Kutubu in Papua New Guinea. Males display an extraordinary deep turquoise-blue body fading to a bright yellow lower flank — unlike most other Melanotaenia. Reaches up to 12 cm and is one of the more robust rainbowfish species. Does best in slightly alkaline water mirroring its lake habitat. A spectacular centrepiece for a larger rainbowfish community.
School of 6+. Slightly alkaline water (pH 7.5–8.5) preferred — reflective of Lake Kutubu's chemistry. Temperature 22–26 °C. Quality flake, frozen bloodworm, spirulina. 150+ L. Excellent oxygenation.
