Xiphophorus maculatus var.
Also known as: Tuxedo Blue Platy, Blue Tuxedo Platy
Origin: Captive bred
The Tuxedo Blue Platy carries the tuxedo gene that causes the rear half of the body to be significantly darker than the front, creating a clean two-tone effect. In this blue variant the lighter front is a steel or sky blue, transitioning sharply to midnight blue at the mid-body.
This pattern is striking and consistent across individuals in a quality line, making it a popular choice for hobbyists who prefer a clean, defined aesthetic over the more variable multicolour strains. Females also carry the tuxedo pattern, which makes sexing straightforward.
A very hardy and adaptable fish, the Tuxedo Blue Platy is suitable for beginners and experienced hobbyists alike.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 10–20; adaptable to a wide range of conditions. Tank: 60 L minimum; community or species tank; plants appreciated. Feeding: Quality flake, spirulina, occasional frozen foods; 2 meals daily. Breeding: Prolific livebearer; 20–80 fry per brood; tuxedo pattern is strongly heritable. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal with tetras, rasboras, and peaceful catfish.
