Mespilia globulus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Mespilia globulus, the Tuxedo Urchin, is one of the most visually striking reef urchins, featuring vivid blue to violet coloration between alternating dark bands that create a distinctive tuxedo-like pattern. An effective grazer of coralline algae, hair algae, and detritus, it is generally considered safer around corals than many other urchin species. Sought after by reef keepers who want both a functional algae controller and a visually extraordinary display animal.
Place in a mature reef with ample rock surface for grazing. Ensure the tank is large enough to avoid it being dislodged by strong flow, which can damage corals it falls on. Supplement with dried seaweed if natural algae is insufficient. Acclimate slowly via the drip method. Do not expose to air. Compatible with most reef fish and invertebrates — monitor interaction with very small ornamental shrimp.
