About

Homaloptera tweediei inhabits the clear, fast-flowing hill streams of Peninsular Malaysia, where it navigates powerful rocky chutes using its broad paired fins and flattened underside. Its patterning consists of fine, intricate reticulations of dark brown on a pale ground — more detailed and delicate than many Homaloptera species — making it particularly attractive when in prime condition. The species is seldom imported and its scarcity in the trade gives it a desirable status among hillstream specialists.

In aquaria, Tweedie's River Loach has requirements similar to other Homaloptera: strong directional flow, good oxygenation, clean water with low nitrates, and a smooth substrate with ample flat surfaces for resting and grazing. It is an omnivore and will graze biofilm but also accepts sinking prepared foods, which is helpful given that its diet cannot rely on in-tank algae alone in many home aquaria.

New imports should be quarantined for a minimum of four weeks due to the relatively high parasite load common in wild-caught Malaysian loaches. Once established, the species is robust and long-lived. Its rarity means that any captive breeding would represent a significant contribution to the hobby.

Care Guide

Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.0–7.0, GH 3–12, KH 1–6; strong current essential; dissolved oxygen near saturation; avoid any nitrate accumulation above 20 ppm. Tank: 100 L minimum; smooth rounded boulders, open current channels, and minimal fine substrate to prevent silt accumulation. Feeding: Omnivore — biofilm, algae wafers, sinking pellets, and occasional frozen daphnia or bloodworm. Breeding: No documented captive breeding; wild-caught imports only; condition as per other Homaloptera species with cooling and increased flow. Compatibility: Peaceful; best kept in a specialist Peninsular Malaysian hillstream biotope; avoid housing with small, delicate nano species.
