Apistogramma bitaeniata
Also known as: Two-banded Apisto, Bitaeniata Dwarf Cichlid, Double-stripe Apistogramma
Origin: Peru
Apistogramma bitaeniata is one of the more elegant members of the genus, instantly recognized by two parallel dark horizontal bands running the length of the body. Found across a broad range in the western Amazon of Peru and Brazil, it inhabits slow, blackwater streams with soft, highly acidic water.
Males are spectacular in breeding dress, with the body bands contrasted against vivid blue-green iridescent scale rows and elongated dorsal and caudal fin extensions. Females are smaller and adopt classic yellow-and-black breeding coloration when guarding a clutch.
This species requires meticulous water quality and genuine softness to thrive long-term. It is best kept in a dedicated Amazonian biotope with fine sand, driftwood, leaf litter, and subdued lighting.
Water: Soft, acidic — pH 4.5–6.5, temperature 24–28°C, TDS under 80 ppm ideal. Tank: 80 L minimum; sandy substrate with leaf litter, driftwood, and dense vegetation. Feeding: Small live and frozen invertebrates are essential; pellets accepted as supplement. Breeding: Cave spawner; female guards; very soft water critical for egg viability. Compatibility: Peaceful small tetras (e.g., pencilfish, neons) work well; avoid fin-nippers.
