Aphyosemion bivittatum
Also known as: Two-banded Killifish, Bivittatum Killifish
Origin: Nigeria, Cameroon
Aphyosemion bivittatum is a compact and colourful killifish from Nigeria and Cameroon, named for the two distinct horizontal stripes running along the flanks of both sexes. Males develop additional vivid red spotting on the body and fins, and the caudal fin typically shows a multicoloured lyre-like extension in mature individuals. The species inhabits shaded forest streams and pools in the Guinea-Congolian rainforest zone.
A. bivittatum is one of the easier Aphyosemion to keep, tolerating a wider range of water conditions than many of its relatives. A 40 L species or peaceful community tank with soft slightly acidic water, fine-leaved plants, and a spawning mop is ideal. The species is non-annual; eggs are collected from the mop and incubated in damp peat for two to three weeks.
This species is an excellent entry point into the Aphyosemion genus for those new to killifish keeping. Its tolerance, attractive striping, and willingness to breed in a well-maintained aquarium make it consistently popular in the killifish hobby.
Water: 22–26 °C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft to moderately soft water (GH 3–10). Tank: 40 L species or peaceful community tank with plants and a spawning mop. Feeding: Live Artemia, Daphnia, bloodworm, and quality micro-pellet or flake; feed daily. Breeding: Collect spawning mop weekly; incubate eggs on damp peat for 2–3 weeks. Compatibility: Peaceful with small calm community fish; males may display toward each other.
