Kryptopterus bicirrhis
Also known as: Two-barbel Glass Catfish, Large Glass Catfish
Origin: Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand)
Kryptopterus bicirrhis is a larger and less commonly available relative of the familiar Glass Catfish K. vitreolus, found across a wider range of Southeast Asia including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. It is distinguished by its greater body length, slightly larger head, and the two prominent barbels that give it its scientific name. Like its relative, the body is largely transparent, though the iridescence of the flank is slightly more pronounced in adults.
In the aquarium, K. bicirrhis requires essentially the same conditions as K. vitreolus — a school of at least six individuals, excellent water quality, moderate current, and a planted tank with open mid-water space. It is somewhat less commonly available and slightly more demanding of water quality, making it a better choice for experienced aquarists who can maintain consistently pristine conditions.
This species feeds primarily on small fish and invertebrates in the wild and should be offered a varied diet of frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, and small sinking or suspended pellets in captivity. Avoid keeping with very small nano fish that may be predated. Its greater size makes it better suited to medium-to-large community aquariums.
Water: 20–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–12); high water quality required. Tank: 120 L minimum; planted with substantial open mid-water space; moderate gentle flow. Feeding: Frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, small sinking pellets; may take small fish. Breeding: Not achieved in home aquaria. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep in schools of 6+; avoid nano tankmates that may be eaten.
