Corydoras bilineatus
Also known as: Two-line Cory, Bilineatus Cory
Origin: Peru (Ucayali River system)
Corydoras bilineatus is a medium-sized cory from the Ucayali River system in Peru, distinguished by two parallel dark lateral stripes that run from just behind the operculum to the base of the caudal fin. The body between and below these stripes is pale cream to silvery, and the fins are largely hyaline with faint spotting on the dorsal.
This species is infrequently exported and is primarily available through specialist importers who source fish directly from Peruvian exporters. Its care requirements are similar to those of other Peruvian cories — soft to moderately hard water, a fine sand substrate, and a well-planted or decorated tank that provides adequate shelter.
Like all cories, C. bilineatus is a dedicated bottom feeder that benefits greatly from regular offerings of sinking and buried foods. It is completely peaceful and will not disturb plants, eggs, or other fish. Keeping a group of at least six will encourage natural schooling behaviour and reduce shyness.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 22–26°C; avoid extremes in hardness. Tank: 60 L or larger with fine sand substrate and moderate planting; good filtration and regular water changes are important. Feeding: Sinking pellets, Repashy Soilent Green, frozen Tubifex, and bloodworm; supplement with blanched zucchini. Breeding: Egg-scatter spawner; use a cool water change as a trigger and provide fine-leafed plants for egg deposition. Compatibility: Peaceful with all non-aggressive tankmates; ideal companion for tetras, dwarf cichlids, and gouramis.
