Barbus bimaculatus
Also known as: Two-Spot African Barb, Twin-Spot Barb
Origin: West and Central Africa
Barbus bimaculatus is distributed across river systems in West and Central Africa, inhabiting vegetated river margins, floodplain pools, and slow-flowing streams. The twin-spot pattern for which it is named is consistent and distinctive: a dark blotch behind the gill cover and a second at the caudal peduncle. Both sexes share the pattern; males are slightly slimmer and more intensely coloured when in breeding condition.
In the aquarium this species is hardy and adaptable, tolerating a range of water conditions while preferring slightly soft, slightly acidic to neutral water. It schools actively, and a group of eight or more creates an excellent display, particularly in a planted tank where the spots contrast against green vegetation.
Barbus bimaculatus poses no husbandry difficulties: it eats standard aquarium flake, pellets, and frozen foods eagerly and breeds readily in well-conditioned tanks over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderate hardness (GH 4–15). Tank: 80 L minimum; planted with open swimming space; moderate filtration. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, pellets, frozen daphnia, bloodworm; accepts most standard aquarium foods. Breeding: Egg-scatterer over fine plants; females visibly plumper when gravid. Compatibility: Peaceful with all similarly sized community fish; ideal for African biotope tanks.
