About

The Two Spot Barb is a slender, attractive cyprinid endemic to the streams and rivers of Sri Lanka. Unlike many barbs, this species is notably peaceful and poses little threat to tankmates' fins, making it considerably more community-friendly than relatives such as the Tiger Barb. It displays a silvery to golden-olive body with two distinct dark spots — one at the mid-body and one at the caudal peduncle — giving it a clean, elegant appearance. Males tend to be slimmer and develop more intense coloration during spawning. Reaching up to 7 cm, it is a manageable size for medium-sized community aquaria. The Two Spot Barb is an active, mid-water swimmer that thrives in groups of five or more, where its natural schooling behavior reduces stress and enhances boldness. It inhabits clear to slightly tea-stained streams in the wild and adapts well to a variety of aquarium conditions within the parameters of soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water. An undemanding omnivore, it readily accepts flake, pellet, and frozen foods. Its combination of peaceful temperament, attractive markings, and ease of care makes it a worthwhile addition to any community tank.

Care Guide

Tank Setup A minimum of 80 liters is suitable for a group of five or six fish. Use fine sand or dark gravel substrate and decorate with driftwood, smooth rocks, and robust plants such as Java fern, Cryptocoryne, and Anubias. Open swimming space in the middle of the tank is important for this active species. Gentle to moderate filtration works well.

Water Parameters Maintain pH between 6.0 and 7.5. No specific hardness figures are published, but moderately soft to moderately hard water is appropriate. Temperature should be kept at 20–27°C. This species tolerates a good range of conditions and is suitable for beginners. Perform regular water changes of 20–25% weekly to maintain water quality.

Feeding An easy-going omnivore that accepts virtually all standard aquarium foods. Offer quality flake or micro-pellets as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. Occasional offerings of blanched vegetables add dietary variety. Feed small portions two to three times per day.

Tankmates The peaceful nature of the Two Spot Barb makes it compatible with a wide range of community fish. Suitable companions include tetras, rasboras, danios, small gouramis, corydoras, and peaceful loaches. Its calm demeanor even allows it to be kept alongside long-finned varieties without incident.

Health and Maintenance A hardy and undemanding species. Maintain stable water conditions and a varied diet to prevent common ailments. Watch for signs of ich or fin rot. This species is not prone to aggression-related injuries, which simplifies health management.
