Ancistrus sp. (L005)
Also known as: Two-spot Bristlenose, L005 Bristlenose, Double-spot Ancistrus
Origin: Rio Negro, Brazil
The Two-spot Bristlenose Pleco (L005) is a small and adaptable loricariid from blackwater streams feeding into the Rio Negro. Males develop the characteristic bushy facial tentacles of the bristlenose group, and both sexes display two distinctive dark spots at the base of the dorsal fin — the feature that names this species.
This species is well-suited to planted aquariums, where it grazes on algae without damaging healthy plant tissue. Provide driftwood, flat stones, and PVC pipes as cave retreats. A varied diet including algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and small amounts of frozen foods keeps specimens in prime condition.
L005 is one of the easiest plecos to breed in captivity. Males claim caves and actively guard clutches of orange eggs. Raising fry on infusoria and finely powdered spirulina is straightforward, making this species an excellent introduction to pleco breeding.
Water: pH 5.5–7.2, temperature 24–29°C, GH 1–12, KH 1–6; prefers soft acidic water. Tank: 80 L minimum; planted tanks with driftwood and multiple small caves are ideal. Feeding: Algae wafers, blanched zucchini, cucumber, and occasional bloodworm or brine shrimp. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards eggs; relatively easy to breed; fry are robust. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; peaceful with virtually all non-aggressive species.
