Mystus wyckii
Also known as: Twospot Catfish, Wyck's Catfish, Scarlet Catfish
Origin: Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia)
Mystus wyckii is one of the largest members of the genus Mystus, native to large river systems across Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It is an impressive, powerful catfish with a bold dark lateral stripe, a large head, and a capacious mouth that clearly signals its predatory lifestyle. In the wild it is a significant piscivore, consuming fish and large invertebrates in the deeper, faster reaches of major rivers.
In captivity, Mystus wyckii grows rapidly and requires an enormous aquarium — 500 litres or more — with very powerful filtration and robust decor. It is aggressive and will readily eat fish of surprising size; tankmates must be carefully chosen and of comparable or greater size. Despite its aggressive nature toward smaller species, it can be maintained long-term with other monster fish of equal stature.
This species requires a high-protein diet of whole fish, large prawns, earthworms, and chunked fish fillet. Feed two or three times weekly for adults to avoid overfeeding. Its striking appearance, bold personality, and impressive eventual size make it a centrepiece species for the dedicated large-fish specialist.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–15). Tank: 500 L minimum; powerful filtration; smooth large rocks and wood; avoid small decor. Feeding: Whole fish, large prawns, earthworms, fish fillet; high-protein diet 2–3 times weekly. Breeding: Not achieved in home aquaria. Compatibility: Aggressive toward smaller fish; house only with large, robust monster fish species.
