Tyrannochromis nigriventer
Also known as: Dark-bellied Tyrant Cichlid, Nigriventer Hap
Origin: Lake Malawi
Tyrannochromis nigriventer is the lesser-known sibling species to T. macrostoma, equally formidable as an apex predator but distinguished by its darker ventral coloration — the undersides of breeding males take on a deep blue-black hue, creating a dramatic contrast with the bright metallic blue of the flanks. This species is rarely exported from Lake Malawi, making it a coveted find for serious Malawi collectors.
Like all Tyrannochromis, nigriventer uses an ambush strategy, remaining relatively still and then striking with explosive speed. It is a mid-sized to large predator reaching 32 cm, requiring a spacious tank with robust tankmates. The species tolerates other large Haps reasonably well provided all fish are introduced simultaneously and the tank is large enough to establish non-overlapping territories.
Maternal mouthbrooder. Females are cryptically patterned brown-grey. Breeding is rarely achieved in home aquaria due to size constraints but is possible in tanks of 600 L or more with excellent water quality.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; pristine water essential; powerful canister filtration recommended. Tank: 600 L minimum; sandy substrate with open swimming zones; sparse rockwork for visual breaks. Feeding: Large carnivore pellets, silversides, whole krill; feed every other day. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; isolate brooding female; fry are relatively large and easy to raise on crushed pellets. Compatibility: Large Haps only; not suitable for community Malawi tanks with medium-sized fish.
