Uaru amphiacanthoides
Also known as: Triangle Cichlid, Uaru, Waroo
Origin: South America
Uaru amphiacanthoides is one of the most intelligent and personable cichlids in the hobby, forming strong bonds with both tankmates and their keeper. Originating from the central Amazon basin, it inhabits tannin-rich blackwater rivers and flooded forests. Its defining feature is a large triangular-to-teardrop black marking on the mid-flank. Juveniles are remarkably different, sporting a complex pattern of small white spots on a dark body. Uaru are highly herbivorous and will consume most aquarium plants, so hardy vegetation or silk alternatives are recommended.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 5.0–7.0, very soft (GH 1–8). Tank: Minimum 500L for a group of 3–4; provide driftwood, caves, and either very hardy or artificial plants. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina flakes, cucumber, courgette, lettuce, and cichlid herbivore pellets. Breeding: Forms monogamous pairs from a group; spawns on vertical surfaces; both parents highly attentive. Compatibility: Peaceful with other large cichlids; keep in groups of 3+ to reduce inter-fish tension.
