Uaru amphiacanthoides
Also known as: Uaru Cichlid, Triangle Cichlid, Waroo
Origin: Wild caught / Captive bred – Amazon basin, South America
Uaru amphiacanthoides, the uaru or triangle cichlid, is a large, laterally compressed Amazonian cichlid that undergoes one of the most dramatic colour transformations in cichlid keeping. Juveniles display a complex spotted brown pattern while adults develop a smooth olive-grey to greenish-brown body with a single bold black teardrop-shaped blotch on the mid-flank.
Uaru are primarily herbivorous cichlids in the wild, feeding extensively on fallen fruit, seeds, and aquatic vegetation. In the aquarium they will consume most plant matter if not sufficiently fed with vegetable-based foods. They are best maintained as pairs or small groups in large, well-filtered aquaria.
Despite their impressive adult size, uaru are relatively peaceful cichlids that can be kept in mixed species setups with other large, robust Amazonian fish. They are long-lived, form strong pair bonds, and are rewarding fish to breed given adequate space and conditioning.
Water: Temperature 25–29°C, pH 5.5–7.0, GH 1–10, KH 1–5; soft to moderately soft water; large frequent water changes critical for this messy feeder. Tank: 400 L minimum for a pair; robust filtration essential; limit delicate plants as uaru will consume them. Feeding: Primarily herbivorous; spirulina wafers, blanched vegetables, fruit, quality cichlid pellets, and occasional live/frozen foods. Breeding: Open spawner; pairs clean a flat surface and guard eggs; soft, slightly acidic water improves fry survival. Compatibility: Keep with other large, peaceful Amazonian cichlids (severums, geophagus); avoid aggressive species.
