Uaru fernandezyepezi
Also known as: Panda Uaru, Fernandez-Yepez's Uaru
Origin: South America
Uaru fernandezyepezi is one of the rarest cichlids in the hobby, collected only from remote blackwater tributaries of the upper Orinoco in Venezuela. Its striking black-and-white patterning, reminiscent of a panda, is unlike any other cichlid. The species requires extremely soft, highly acidic blackwater conditions and elevated temperatures to thrive — parameters that challenge even experienced aquarists. Like its relative U. amphiacanthoides, it is highly herbivorous and highly intelligent. Obtaining this species from reputable sources with known provenance is strongly recommended.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 4.5–6.5, extremely soft (GH 0–5); use RO water with peat or catappa leaf conditioning. Tank: Minimum 500L; heavily decorated with driftwood and leaf litter; very dim lighting. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina, blanched vegetables, algae wafers; supplement with small frozen foods. Breeding: Extremely difficult in captivity; requires perfect water conditions and a well-bonded pair. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep only with non-aggressive similarly-sized species; avoid all fin-nippers.
