Mormyrops anguilloides
Also known as: Ubangi Mormyrid, Eel Mormyrid, Large Mormyrid
Origin: Central Africa
Mormyrops anguilloides is one of the larger mormyrid species, native to the Congo basin and Ubangi River of Central Africa. Unlike the Elephantnose Fish, it lacks a pronounced schnauzenorgan but possesses a large, domed head housing a proportionally massive brain relative to body size — characteristic of the Mormyridae family. It is a nocturnal hunter that uses electric organ discharges to navigate and locate invertebrate prey in soft substrate. Rarely available in the hobby; commands specialist care including soft, tannin-rich water, dim lighting, and live or frozen meaty foods. Suitable for an experienced keeper of African oddball species.
Water: 23-28°C, pH 6.0-7.2, soft and slightly acidic; tannins beneficial; excellent filtration required. Tank: Minimum 400L; dim lighting; fine soft substrate; large caves and driftwood for shelter. Feeding: Carnivore; live/frozen bloodworms, small earthworms, brine shrimp, tubifex; feeds nocturnally. Breeding: Not documented in home aquaria; seasonal spawner linked to water level changes in nature. Compatibility: Peaceful with dissimilar species; may conflict with other large mormyrids; avoid fin-nippers.
