About

Schistura udomritthiruji honours Wichian Udomritthiruj, a highly respected Thai ichthyologist who contributed substantially to the knowledge of Thailand's freshwater fish diversity. The species itself is among the more intricately patterned Thai Schistura, with a complex network of fine dark reticulations and blotches on a warm cream-to-tan background that creates an almost hand-painted appearance. It inhabits the clear, rocky hill streams of Thailand in the same flowing, oxygen-rich environments occupied by other members of the genus.

In the aquarium, S. udomritthiruji is a lively and assertive species with the typical Schistura combination of inquisitiveness and territoriality. It is active throughout the day, exploring every corner of the aquarium and vigorously defending favoured rock shelters. Its complex patterning is most vivid in well-conditioned fish in clean, cool water, and deteriorates rapidly with declining water quality.

This species pairs excellently with other Thai hillstream species in a Southeast Asian biotope aquarium. Its distinctive patterning creates an attractive visual contrast against the plainer coloration of Homaloptera species or the banding of Schistura balteata, and its active personality enlivens the display.

Care Guide

Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 4–15, KH 2–8; moderate to strong flow and high oxygenation; reticulated patterning fades visibly in poor water. Tank: 70 L minimum; multiple boulder groups for territory establishment; smooth pebble substrate; ensure strong flow reaches all areas of the tank. Feeding: Omnivore — sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and cyclops; varied diet essential for maintaining complex patterning. Breeding: Rarely bred; condition with cool water changes and increased flow; isolate a conditioned pair in a spawning tank if breeding is the goal. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive within species; peaceful toward dissimilar fish; avoid housing with other mid-sized bottom loaches of similar pattern.
