Xenia umbellata
Origin: Red Sea, Indo-Pacific
Xenia umbellata features broader, umbrella-shaped polyp clusters that pulse rhythmically in ideal flow and lighting conditions, creating a hypnotic display that draws the eye in any reef aquarium. Its creamy-white colouration contrasts beautifully against darker rockwork or colourful encrusting neighbours. Primarily photosynthetic, it thrives when iodide is within normal reef parameters and water quality is consistently high.
Position in moderate flow with medium lighting; strong direct flow causes polyps to collapse rather than pulse. Maintain temperature 24–27°C, SG 1.023–1.025, stable trace elements. Can spread rapidly under ideal conditions — allocate space for expansion or periodically fragged. Declining Xenia is often an indicator of water quality issues.
