Synodontis unicolor
Also known as: Unicolour Synodontis, Plain Squeaker
Origin: Central Africa
Synodontis unicolor is among the plainer-looking Synodontis species, lacking the bold patterning of more celebrated relatives; its grey-brown, largely unpatterned body is its most distinctive feature. This plainness is offset by its highly adaptable constitution and peaceful temperament, making it a useful and reliable occupant of large African community aquariums.
Native to Central African rivers, it tolerates a broader range of water chemistry than many congeners and adapts readily to moderate hardness and near-neutral pH. It is a competent forager that will work over substrate and rock surfaces efficiently, helping to keep the aquarium floor clean.
For aquarists wishing to establish a mixed-Synodontis collection without high-maintenance species, S. unicolor provides reliable performance and an interesting contrast to more gaudy tankmates.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–15, KH 2–10). Tank: 200 L minimum; caves and driftwood for shelter; smooth substrate suitable for foraging. Feeding: Sinking pellets, catfish wafers, frozen bloodworm; readily accepts commercial foods. Breeding: Cave spawner; not commonly documented. Compatibility: Peaceful with most medium and large community fish; good mixer with other Synodontis species.
