Danio unilineatus
Also known as: Single-striped Danio, Unilineatus Danio
Origin: Myanmar, Indochina
Danio unilineatus, the Single-striped Danio, is found across Myanmar and Indochina, inhabiting a variety of still and slow-flowing water bodies including paddy fields, ditches, and shallow stream margins. Its most distinctive feature is a single, clearly defined dark horizontal stripe running from behind the gill cover to the tail base, set against a pale golden-silver body. It is one of the less commonly kept danios despite being hardy and adaptable. In the aquarium it does best in groups of six or more, tolerating a wide range of water conditions. A planted tank with gentle flow suits it well. It is entirely peaceful and mixes well with rasboras, small tetras, and peaceful catfish. Diet is undemanding: flake, small pellets, and frozen foods are all accepted.
Water: Temperature 20–26 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–15; adaptable to a broad range of conditions. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted community setup with open swimming area; tight-fitting lid. Feeding: Flake, micro-pellet; supplement with frozen daphnia and cyclops for conditioning. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; spawning mop or fine plants in separate tank; remove parents post-spawning. Compatibility: Fully peaceful; ideal community fish with rasboras, small tetras, corydoras, and small livebearers.
