Betta unimaculata
Origin: Borneo (Sabah, Kalimantan)
Betta unimaculata is a robust, large-growing mouthbrooding betta from clear Bornean forest streams, distinguished by a single dark spot at the caudal fin base — the origin of its species name. Far larger and more active than the familiar veiltail betta, it is generally peaceful with similar-sized species and makes an impressive centrepiece in a Borneo biotope alongside kuhli loaches and other stream species. An exciting choice for dedicated wild betta enthusiasts.
House singly or as a pair in a 120 L or larger tank with a tight lid — this species jumps readily. Provide a sandy bottom, driftwood, and leaf litter for a Borneo stream biotope feel. Feed live and frozen invertebrates: daphnia, bloodworms, and crickets. Maintain temperature 22–26°C, pH 5.5–7.5, soft to medium-hard water. Males perform mouthbrooding and should be left undisturbed.
