Barbus unitaeniatus
Also known as: Unitaeniatus Barb, Slender Barb, Single-Stripe Barb
Origin: Sub-Saharan Africa (multiple river systems)
Barbus unitaeniatus is one of the most widespread barb species in sub-Saharan Africa, recorded from river systems across West, Central, and East Africa. It inhabits a wide variety of freshwater habitats including rivers, streams, floodplain lakes, and swamps. The defining character is the single, continuous, dark lateral band that runs unbroken from the snout tip through the eye to the base of the caudal fin — a bold, graphic pattern that makes this species instantly recognisable.
In the aquarium, Barbus unitaeniatus is among the most straightforward of African barbs. It tolerates a wide range of water conditions, adapts readily to standard tropical temperatures, and is completely peaceful toward all tankmates. Schools of six or more are active and confident, filling mid-water with purposeful schooling movement. A planted tank with open swimming areas and a sandy substrate creates an ideal environment.
This species is an easy omnivore accepting all standard aquarium foods. Its combination of bold patterning, hardy constitution, peaceful temperament, and wide natural range makes it one of the most practical and rewarding African barbs for aquarists of any experience level.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, broad hardness tolerance; one of the most adaptable African barbs. Tank: 100 L minimum; open swimming with planted sides; standard tropical conditions. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp; accepts all foods. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; prolific and easy to spawn with good conditioning. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal with all African community fish — tetras, killifish, cichlids, and catfish.
