Synodontis nigriventris
Origin: Congo basin, Central Africa
Synodontis nigriventris, the Upside-Down Catfish, is a captivating West African catfish famous for swimming upside-down — an adaptation for grazing algae and biofilm from the undersides of broad leaves and driftwood. Its countershading (darker belly, paler back) is the reverse of most fish, reflecting this behaviour. Peaceful and personable; suitable for community tanks with medium to large peaceful fish. A popular and long-established aquarium fish.
Temperature 22–26 °C, neutral water. Provide broad-leaved plants (Amazon swords) and driftwood for upside-down grazing. Groups of 3+ for best display behaviour. Feed sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and frozen bloodworm. Peaceful with all community fish.
