Dario urops
Also known as: Urops Dario, Tail-marked Dario, Bangladesh Dario
Origin: Bangladesh
Dario urops was described from Bangladesh and takes its species name from the distinctive caudal marking that separates it from closely related Dario species. It inhabits densely vegetated standing-water habitats including rice paddies, oxbow lakes, and marshes in the lowlands of Bangladesh. Males exhibit the genus' signature deep red-orange barring with iridescent blue scale highlights, though the colouration is somewhat more subdued than in some congeners.
As with all Dario, husbandry centres on providing exclusively live or frozen micro-foods, a heavily planted nano aquarium with cave sites, and minimal competition. Its Bangladeshi lowland origin means it is comfortable at slightly higher temperatures than some northern species, though it still requires good water quality and regular maintenance.
Breeding in captivity follows the cave-spawning pattern with paternal care. Maintaining a single male with two or three females in a dedicated 20-litre tank maximises breeding success while avoiding male-on-male aggression. Fry require micro live foods for the first week of free-swimming life.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately soft; gentle sponge filtration. Tank: 20 L minimum; planted nano with caves; low light and gentle current. Feeding: Carnivore; live/frozen micro foods — baby brine shrimp, Cyclops, Daphnia nauplii. Breeding: Cave-spawner with paternal care; 1 male to 2–3 females for best results. Compatibility: Nano species tank; adult shrimp as sole companions.
