Apistogramma urteagai
Also known as: Urteaga Apisto, Urteagai Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: Peru
Apistogramma urteagai is a modestly sized Peruvian species that tends to fly under the radar of casual hobbyists but generates genuine excitement among Apistogramma specialists when it becomes available. Its coloration is refined rather than flashy: delicate yellow-blue body tones with a black lateral stripe and a distinctive fine black spotting pattern on the caudal fin that is unique among the genus.
Native to soft, acidic streams of the Peruvian Amazon, this species requires the standard care approach for Peruvian apistos — good water softness, acidic pH, fine substrate, and multiple hiding places. It is a cave spawner with typical female brood-guarding behavior.
A. urteagai is a rewarding fish for the collector who appreciates subtle elegance over bold coloration and enjoys the distinctiveness that makes Apistogramma such a compelling group to explore.
Water: Soft, acidic — pH 5.0–6.5, temperature 24–28°C. Tank: 60 L with fine sand, caves, and leaf litter. Feeding: Live/frozen invertebrates and quality micro-pellets. Breeding: Cave spawner; female guards; moderately straightforward. Compatibility: Small peaceful South American dither fish.
