Cyprinus rubrofuscus
Also known as: Utsuri Koi, Two-tone Koi, Nishikigoi
Origin: Japan
Utsuri koi are defined by a black (sumi) base with a secondary color: white (Shiro Utsuri), red/orange (Hi Utsuri), or yellow (Ki Utsuri). They are sometimes confused with Showa, but in Utsuri there is no red AND white together — only black plus one other color. The pattern wraps dramatically around the body, creating a bold, eye-catching effect.
Water: 5–25°C, pH 6.8–7.8, stable water chemistry helps sumi develop fully. Pond: minimum 1,000 L; good biological filtration essential for large koi. Feeding: quality koi pellets; avoid excessive color enhancers that can disrupt sumi development. Behaviour: active swimmer; Utsuri patterns continue to develop and deepen with age. Compatibility: all koi; the bold pattern contrasts beautifully with lighter-colored varieties.
