Geosesarma krathing
Also known as: Krathing Vampire Crab, Thai Vampire Crab
Origin: Thailand
Geosesarma krathing is one of the few Geosesarma species confirmed from mainland Southeast Asia, originating from forest habitats in Thailand. It shares the genus' characteristic small size, vivid eye colouration, and semi-terrestrial lifestyle, but its body tones run warmer — displaying ochre, sienna, and subdued violet hues rather than the intense purples seen in some Sulawesi forms.
In the wild, G. krathing inhabits moist forest floors near small streams and seepages, foraging on leaf litter, fallen fruit, invertebrates, and decaying organic matter. In captivity it thrives in a bioactive paludarium setup with tropical soil, living moss carpets, and a shallow water section representing no more than 30–40% of the total floor space.
This species is among the more tolerant Geosesarma in terms of temperature, accepting a slightly broader range than strict equatorial species. It is a direct developer, and females can be identified by the broader abdominal flap. Small groups work well together provided adequate shelter and territory are available. As with all vampire crabs, a tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable as these crabs are adept climbers.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 7.2–8.0, GH 5–15, KH 2–10; shallow water section only; avoid chlorinated water. Tank: minimum 30 L paludarium; moist tropical soil, leaf litter, living moss; multiple cork bark hides; secure lid. Feeding: omnivore — dried insects, fruit flies, blanched vegetables, sinking pellets, tropical leaf litter; feed every 1–2 days. Breeding: direct developer; female carries small clutch for 4–6 weeks; juveniles independent from hatching. Compatibility: 1 male to 2–3 females; avoid mixing with other crab species; incompatible with any aquatic fish.
