Geosesarma peraccae
Also known as: Peracca's Vampire Crab, Southeast Asian Vampire Crab
Origin: Southeast Asia
Geosesarma peraccae holds a notable place in the scientific literature as one of the earlier formally described members of the genus. While many vampire crabs in the trade are undescribed or awaiting formal description, G. peraccae provides collectors with a named species, adding an extra dimension of authenticity to biotope-focused paludarium projects.
Its coloration is dark — running from deep brown to almost black on the carapace — with the vivid yellow eye colour of the genus providing the primary visual focus. The species originates from Southeast Asia and inhabits humid forest margins near streams, foraging on leaf litter, invertebrates, and organic debris.
Care requirements are typical of the genus: a paludarium dominated by moist land area is essential, with tropical soil substrate, living moss, cork bark shelters, and leaf litter. A shallow water section is provided for hydration and moulting. G. peraccae is a direct developer. Maintaining a group with one male and multiple females reduces conspecific aggression and increases the likelihood of successful breeding.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 7.2–8.0, GH 5–15, KH 2–10; shallow water only; dechlorinated. Tank: minimum 30 L paludarium; moist tropical soil, living moss, cork bark, leaf litter; secure ventilated lid. Feeding: omnivore — dried insects, blanched vegetables, leaf litter, sinking pellets; varied diet recommended. Breeding: direct developer; female broods small clutch; juveniles emerge as miniature adults. Compatibility: 1 male to 2–4 females; do not mix with fish; males aggressive to each other.
