Vampire Crab Geosesarma rouxi

Geosesarma rouxi is a modestly coloured but genuinely attractive vampire crab species displaying warm reddish-brown to sienna tones across the carapace, offset by the characteristic vivid yellow eyes of the genus. It originates from humid lowland forest habitats in Indonesia and shares the semi-terrestrial lifestyle of all Geosesarma.

This species is considered more tolerant and robust than some of the more intensely coloured forms, making it a solid choice for keepers new to vampire crabs but experienced with paludariums. It forages actively across the land surface during day and night hours, consuming leaf litter, invertebrates, and organic debris in its natural habitat.

In captivity, G. rouxi accepts a broad diet and does not require highly specialised foods. A well-planted paludarium with moist tropical soil substrate, living mosses, cork bark shelters, and a shallow water area satisfies all its requirements. It is a direct developer, and breeding groups with multiple females per male can be maintained without significant aggression provided adequate space and hides are available.

Water: 23–28°C, pH 7.5–8.0, GH 6–15, KH 3–10; shallow water only; dechlorinated and mineral-balanced. Tank: minimum 30 L paludarium; moist tropical substrate, cork bark, leaf litter, living moss; ventilated secure lid. Feeding: omnivore — dried insects, blanched vegetables, leaf litter, sinking pellets, occasional fruit pieces. Breeding: direct developer; female broods eggs under abdomen; miniature juveniles emerge fully formed. Compatibility: 1 male to 2–3 females; peaceful with conspecifics given space; incompatible with fish.
