Geosesarma serenei
Also known as: Serene's Vampire Crab, Malaysian Vampire Crab
Origin: Malaysia / Borneo
Geosesarma serenei is distributed across Malaysia and parts of Borneo, inhabiting the humid forest margins of small streams, rocky seepages, and moist valley floors. Its coloration tends toward deep violet-black to dark charcoal on the carapace, providing an elegant monochromatic appearance accented by the vivid eye colour typical of the genus.
Captive care follows the standard Geosesarma approach: a paludarium with a generous, consistently moist land area is required, with only a shallow water section. The species is a skilled climber and will exploit any gap in the enclosure, making a well-sealed lid with ventilation panels essential. A temperature-controlled environment maintaining tropical warmth is necessary for long-term health.
G. serenei is a direct developer and has been bred successfully in captivity in bioactive paludarium setups. Groups maintained with more females than males reduce aggression. This species benefits particularly from the presence of leaf litter — Indian almond leaves, dried magnolia leaves, and catappa pods not only serve as food and shelter but also leach tannins that promote a natural microbiome in the substrate.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 7.2–8.0, GH 5–15, KH 2–10; shallow water section; catappa leaves beneficial. Tank: minimum 30 L paludarium; moist substrate, living moss, leaf litter, cork bark hides; sealed lid with ventilation. Feeding: omnivore — dried insects, leaf litter, blanched vegetables, sinking pellets; feed every 1–2 days. Breeding: direct developer; female broods for 4–6 weeks; miniature juveniles fully independent from hatching. Compatibility: 1 male to 2–3 females; incompatible with fish; avoid mixing with other Geosesarma unless space is very large.
