About

Geosesarma versicolor is notable within the genus for its exceptional colour variability — individual specimens within the same population can range from olive-green and warm brown to deep burgundy and near-black, with partial red or violet suffusions across the carapace. This variability means that even within a single group, no two crabs are identical, which has earned the species devoted followings among collectors who appreciate natural biological variation.

Native to Sulawesi, G. versicolor inhabits the same type of humid forest-floor microhabitats favoured by other island Geosesarma species. Its care requirements are standard for the genus: a paludarium with substantial moist land area, tropical substrate, moss, leaf litter, and a shallow water section. Temperature consistency and high humidity are the most critical environmental parameters.

G. versicolor is a direct developer and has been bred in captivity. As with other Geosesarma, brooding females carry a clutch of eggs under the abdominal flap for several weeks until fully formed juveniles emerge. The species is peaceful within a well-structured group and is suited to experienced paludarium keepers.

Care Guide

Water: 23–28°C, pH 7.5–8.0, GH 6–15, KH 3–10; shallow section; dechlorinated and temperature-stable. Tank: minimum 30 L paludarium; moist tropical substrate, leaf litter, dense moss, cork shelters; secure lid. Feeding: omnivore — dried insects, fruit flies, blanched vegetables, sinking pellets, catappa leaves for browsing. Breeding: direct developer; female broods 4–6 weeks; juveniles independent upon emergence; variably coloured offspring. Compatibility: 1 male to 2–3 females; do not mix with fish; variably coloured siblings may be kept together.
