Leporacanthicus heterodon
Also known as: Vampire Pleco, L007 Pleco, Chocolate Vampire Pleco
Origin: Rio Xingu, Brazil
The Vampire Pleco (L007) is one of the most visually dramatic members of the Leporacanthicus genus, featuring a jet-black body densely covered in bold white or yellow polka dots. Native to the rocky rapids of the Rio Xingu in Brazil, it demands excellent water flow, high oxygenation, and warm temperatures to thrive in captivity.
Despite its intimidating name, L007 is primarily a carnivore that feeds on invertebrates, crustaceans, and biofilm in the wild. In the aquarium it readily accepts high-protein prepared foods including carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and mussel. Driftwood and cave structures are essential to reduce territorial conflicts.
The Vampire Pleco can be semi-aggressive toward conspecifics and similarly shaped bottom dwellers. It is best kept as the sole large pleco in a tank with robust mid and upper-level tankmates. Water quality must be pristine — regular large water changes and powerful filtration are non-negotiable.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 26–30°C, GH 2–12, KH 1–6; strong flow and high O₂ are critical. Tank: 200 L minimum; rocky substrate, smooth boulders, and deep cave structures essential. Feeding: Carnivore; offer carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, mussels, and prawns. Breeding: Cave spawner; rarely bred in captivity; requires very warm, well-oxygenated water. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive toward conspecifics; best as solo pleco with mid/upper-level tankmates.
